Rodeo Roundup
Rodeo Roundup is one of the pre-rodeo events. Held in late February, it is a celebration of all things Texas. Western attire is encouraged so break out your hats, jeans, and cowboy boots. This event starts with a Go Texan Day proclamation given by the mayor right in front of City Hall in Hermann Square. Then, free BBQ sandwiches from the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Committee will be available.
After that, you can watch the Trail Ride. Teams of horseback riders or covered wagons start from 12 different points in nearby Texas and they all converge on Houston at Memorial Park. It’s an amazing sight and signifies how settlers in the outlying areas used to ride horses through trails to come to the city.
Finally, check out the Carnival at NRG Park and the 2024 World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest! You can ride in the air-conditioned cabins of the huge Ferris Wheel, go on other rides, and play carnival games. There is plenty of food there, as well as live music and DJs.
Wine Events
Back in November, the Rodeo hosted a wine competition. Entries were from all over the world. The winners will be featured at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Roundup & Best Bites Competition to be held at the NRG Center. The award-winning wines will be paired with amazing gourmet food prepared by local culinary artists and students at this event.
Then, the Rodeo Uncorked Championship Wine Auction and Dinner will be held. Ticket holders will have the opportunity to bid on the award-winning wines while enjoying a five-star dinner and cocktails. Auction winners will be able to take their wines home at the end of the night.
Both of these wine events are fundraisers for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo charities. The Houston Rodeo is committed to the education of youth in Texas and contributes millions of dollars to initiatives like scholarships, junior show exhibitors, educational program grants, graduate assistantships, and a school art program. So these Houston Rodeo Tickets for the Roundup and Best Bites, and the Championship Wine Auction and Dinner will provide admission to some of the best things to do in Houston Texas, but they also help improve Texas educational opportunities.

Livestock
The Houston Rodeo is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious livestock exhibition shows. Exhibitors from around Texas and the globe converge on the NRG park hoping to win a prize. There will be many types of cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas, rabbits, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and sheep dogs that will be judged. Junior, youth, and adult exhibitors are eligible for entry.
In addition to the other animals, there is also a horse show. Horses will compete in competitions related to ranching tasks such as cutting, ranch sorting, and roping. There will be donkey, mule, and paint horse competitions as well.
You’ll be able to see all kinds of exciting rodeo events. Bareback riding, tie-down roping, team roping, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, bull riding, chuck wagon racing, steer wrestling, and breakaway roping competitions will be happening throughout the Houston Rodeo.
Junior FFA and 4-H ranchers have the opportunity to auction their award-winning animals during the Junior Market Auctions. There are also commercial livestock sales at NRG Park during the rodeo.
Cowboys and cowgirls that are five years old can take part in the mutton-busting contest. Competitors sit on lambs that frolic around the stadium and the child tries to stay on the back of the mutton for eight seconds. Kids can pre-register for the contest in the NRG stadium or sign up on the day of the competition at The Junction.
Another favorite activity for kids is the calf scramble. After all the rodeo events, 30 boys and girls get placed on the stadium floor with 15 calves. Any child who captures a calf gets a voucher to purchase a calf they can exhibit at next year’s Houston Rodeo. All the kids who are the first ones to catch a calf each night get invited back for a Super Scramble with 19 previous winners and nine calves and the winner of the super scramble gets a cash prize. The mayhem and chaos of this event are always crowd-pleasers!
Concert Lineup
After all the thrilling rodeo activities, a music star takes the stage for a live concert each night of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. While the show usually starts sometime in the evening, its actual start time is entirely dependent on what time the rodeo finishes.
Country music star Blake Shelton starts off the first night of music at the Rodeo. There will also be pop, EDM, hip-hop, rock, and even music in celebration of Tejano Day at the rodeo.
The full lineup is announced in early January and tickets go on sale shortly after. What a way to spend your day when staying in our Houston vacation rentals!

Ranching & Wildlife Expo
If you are interested in hunting or fishing, then you have to check out the ranching and wildlife expo on the east end of the second floor of the NRG Center. There will be several wildlife exhibits there where you can learn how ranching can coexist with wildlife habitats.
There will be seminars that are free and open to the public. Last year’s seminars were on such topics as managing bees, using drones on a ranch, tax issues, dealing with deer, and raising doves.
Youth competitions at the Ranching and Wildlife Expo give kids an opportunity to show off their shooting and archery skills. Other competitions include a wildlife poster board and a ranching and wildlife video contest.
Wine Garden
The Wine Garden is at the Carruth Plaza at NRG Park. It’s open every day during the rodeo. You’ll be able to sip wine and listen to great live music at the Wine Garden.
